“We believe there is no job that should require employees to compromise their
personal safety or have a negative impact on the environment.”
— Michael Manzella, Vice President, Environmental, Health and Safety Our Commitment to EMPLOYEE SAFETY AND HEALTH We are proud of our commitment to the safety of our employees, customers, visitors, and vendors. As expectations continue to broaden – so has our commitment. At RR Donnelley, we have developed a comprehensive management system that enables us to effectively control our safety and health impacts worldwide using a "plan-do-check-act" model. To assure we meet the commitment outlined in our EHS Policy, we have established a series of interrelated standards that define how health and safety should be managed across our global operations. Teamwork and shared responsibility is at the heart of our safety and health structure. With responsibilities integrated into every level of our organization, clearly defined roles and responsibilities, and open lines of communication from facilities to senior management, we can help assure that safety and health issues and opportunities are well understood and effectively managed. We manage a comprehensive training and awareness program, including new employee orientation programs and online training and communications. We also hold topic-specific workshops that bring our colleagues together to educate and collaborate on standards implementation, regulatory updates, and mentoring activities to develop leadership and expertise. Measuring our safety and health results company-wide and closely monitoring our health and safety standards are critical to meeting our commitment of continuous improvement. Measuring and monitoring spotlight where we have been successful in eliminating or reducing our safety and health impacts and where we need to focus on improving performance in the future. The improvements that have been realized in employee safety and health are directly related to the efforts of our facility management, supervisors, EHS professionals, and fellow employees that look out for each other's well being each and every day. Top down accountability and integration of safety and health roles and responsibilities into our operations is another key element of our past successes and will remain an integral part of our plan going forward.
“We care about our employees’ total health, their physical, financial, and personal wellness. When they’re at their best, they do their best… at work, at home, and at play.” — Andrew Panega, Executive Vice President, Chief Human Resources Officer “We have recognized safety as our number one priority.
That commitment, I believe, is confirmed by our safety
records.”— Gaylord Donnelley Our safety and health results are very important to us. While we report our results as rates per 100 employees, following the definitions specified by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (even for International facilities), we are acutely aware that people – not statistics – experience the pain of injuries. Lower rates mean fewer of our colleagues are injured. The improvement in our Recordable Case Rate from 2005-2006 equates to 212 fewer injuries. Our injury rates outperformed the printing industry averages by between 38 percent and 56 percent. ![]() 2006 Safety Milestones Two of our key measures of employee safety and health
are the number of hours worked and the number of
years worked without a lost time injury or illness. The
graph and chart below depict the RR Donnelley locations
in 2006 that reached one of these milestones.

In April, 2006, our Shenzhen, China, manufacturing facility achieved 10 million hours without a lost time
incident. This is a new company record. The last lost time incident at the facility occurred in September of
2004. This facility employs more than 1,500 people.
In December, 2006, our Greenbay, Wisconsin, facilities achieved 7 million hours without a lost time incident. |

“Remember, safety is everyone’s responsibility.”
— Eddie Gay, Environmental, Health and Safety, Lynchburg, VA SAFETY COMES FIRST This is not just a slogan at RR Donnelley’s facility in Lynchburg, Virginia; it’s a way of life. Every employee is actively engaged in developing safe work habits and in developing and implementing responsible safety practices. This philosophy helped Lynchburg become one of the four RR Donnelley sites to be awarded Star status in the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) sponsored by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The VPP recognizes and commends facilities that maintain superior health and safety programs. This facility prints four-color catalogs and retail inserts using the rotogravure printing process. Chemicals, tanks, hazardous materials, and confined spaces around the site mean that employees must be diligent about safety at all times. Results are impressive. RR Donnelley employees have worked together to reduce injury rates by more than 50 percent during just the last six years. During the past three years, Lynchburg’s total injury rate has been 29 percent below the industry average, and the facility’s days-away-from-work, restricted duty, or transferred rate was 38 percent below industry averages. During 2006, 40 percent of the membership of the VPP/Health and Safety team was rotated, allowing new volunteers to get involved. New members commit to two-year terms. The team also elected a new president and vice president to allow others to serve in leadership roles. From the shop floor to the board room, safety is everyone’s responsibility. In Lynchburg, the results demonstrate that this motto guides behavior all day, every day.
